Many are wondering what the Adventist Church is doing in response to the recent earthquake in Haiti.
This is what we know so far:
- Haiti has more than three hundred, thirty-five thousand (335,000) Seventh-day Adventists worshiping in 470 churches. In addition to a hospital and university, the church operates dozens of schools there. Adventists also have an orphanage, which sustained no damage. The 50 children and caretakers there are safe.
- The Seventh-day Adventist Church is mobilizing to assist earthquake victims in Haiti. ADRA International (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) is fully engaged in disaster response efforts. ADRA officials in North and Central America have set a goal of raising five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) in relief funds within seven days.

- Oakwood University, in Huntsville Alabama, has students who volunteer and help people around the world with an organization called NAPS (National Association for the Prevention of Starvation). They will be traveling to the Dominican Republic on Friday morning with a 5:30am departure from Huntsville. NAPS is mobilizing its resources - human and medical - to move into the Dominican Republic and then into Haiti, as there were no direct flights into Haiti. They will be braced for the second wave of danger - disease - as they provide medical relief to many of the victims.

We are requesting each church to devote some time on Sabbath to pray for the people of Haiti, and that the relief efforts will be multiplied in effectiveness, as were the two fish and five loaves. Likewise, we are also asking each church to lift a special offering for Haiti on Sabbath, and send the funds directly to Central States Conference immediately. All funds received by January 22nd will be divided between NAPS and ADRA and forwarded to them immediately.
I know many of you are struggling financially, but this is a time to show that we are indeed our brother’s keeper.
With you in prayer,
Charles W. Drake III, PhD
President, CSC
